Summerville Catholic School (SCS) is a vibrant regional Catholic school within the Diocese of Charleston, proudly supported by four parishes: Immaculate Conception in Goose Creek, St. John the Beloved in Summerville, St. Philip Benizi in Moncks Corner, and St. Theresa the Little Flower in Summerville.
At SCS, we are dedicated to being disciples who embody the teachings of Jesus Christ, nurturing our students in spirit, body, and mind. We warmly welcome all children, including those with special needs and unique challenges, to our campus, where they can strive to reach their fullest potential. Our committed teachers and staff focus on providing individualized learning within a supportive community. We believe in the power of parental involvement and encourage parents to actively participate in our school life.
Located near downtown Summerville, South Carolina, approximately 30 miles northwest of Charleston, SCS has a rich history. In June 1984, Bishop Ernest Unterkoefler, the tenth Bishop of Charleston, announced the establishment of a Catholic school in this rapidly growing community. Under the guidance of Monsignor Richard Madden, SCS opened its doors in August 1984, initially utilizing the religious education center at St. John the Beloved Church.
SCS began its journey with a kindergarten and first-grade class, welcoming 21 eager students. The school expanded in 1985 with the addition of second grade, and by the beginning of the 1986-87 school year, enrollment had grown to 93 students in grades K-3. During this time, a committee comprised of representatives from the supporting parishes was established to initiate the construction of our current building.
The new school building opened in 1987, serving students from kindergarten through fifth grade. As our community grew, so did our facilities; in 1991, we added six classrooms, a large multipurpose room, and a library. That same year, we proudly introduced sixth grade, followed by seventh and eighth grades in the years that followed.
At Summerville Catholic School, we celebrate our history and look forward to a bright future, fostering an environment where every student can thrive and grow in faith and knowledge.
