The Rising 6th Grade Sorting

“There is no strength without unity” is the motto of St. Bron House, one of six houses created at Summerville Catholic School. It represents the core value behind the school’s decision to group students together to work daily on achieving goals and cheering each other on along the way.

Students in grades six through eight will be divided into mixed-grade-level houses. Each house is named after a particular saint, has a motto, a mascot, a cheer and a banner that will hang in the hallway. Two teacher mentors oversee the houses, and two house captains (one eighth grade student and a seventh grade student) lead house meetings.  The names, mentors and mottos of the houses are listed at the end of this letter.  The students’ new house will be their new homeroom for the rest of the year.  Once a student has been assigned to a particular house, they will remain in that house until their graduation or departure from Summerville Catholic.  The current seventh grade house captain will move up to being house captain as an eighth grader.  The vacancy created in the house captain role by the graduating eighth grader will be filled by a rising seventh grader.  Any rising seventh grader may apply to their mentors to be the new house captain in the Spring.  New students will be added to the houses each Fall at the start of the school year or as they arrive at SCS.

At the house meetings, the students work together in various competitions while wearing their house shirts in their designated colors. House members work together to earn points through the competitions. Individual students earn points for their house by participating in school events, community service projects and extracurricular activities. Students carry their own monthly point sheets and must get signatures from adults who sponsor each event they participate in.

The benefits of being involved in such a system are outstanding. Mixing all three grades in the house will provide more opportunities for students to meet peers with whom they may not otherwise interact, and the sixth graders to feel more relaxed moving up to the junior high. Faculty and student relationships will improve as a result of them interacting outside the classroom. Positive peer pressure gets students involved in activities in order to support their house and students can gain a sense of pride in being able to contribute. When all students feel they can make a difference it creates a climate where students and teachers want to be, making the House System a win-win situation!
